Biodiversity And Organic Horticulture Courses

Biodiversity and organic horticulture courses at Glenealy IT Centre

Here at Glenealy IT Centre we are passionate about organic horticulture and biodiversity. We have been developing and running accredited horticulture courses in Wicklow for 10 years. Our accredited biodiversity courses reflects our belief in the natural world as a sustainable resource.

We run the QQI Level 5 Major Award in Organic Horticulture, which includes a biodiversity module. In addition, we now run the biodiversity module – Biodiversity and the Natural Environment QQI Level 5 – as a 12 week, part-time course delivered via blended learning. This short course will also include the study of horticultural science.

Students will develop organic gardening skills by growing fruit, vegetables and herbs.  Learning also involves demonstrations, field trips and classroom lectures (in addition to online learning for the Biodiversity short course).

Glenealy IT Centre students and their tutor (from the KWETB funded QQI Level 5 Major Organic Horticulture course) were involved in the award winning “Moving Forward” Cheshire Homes garden at Bloom.

Check out the Organic Horticulture and Biodiversity course page to see a video of their tutor, Mike, talk about this award winning garden’s design concept.

Biodiversity is the variety of all life on earth, its communities and habitat. Each species depends on the services provided by other species to ensure survival, and declining biodiversity is a concern. Our biodiversity course explores the natural environment as a sustainable resource, with particular reference to the Wicklow area. Students will also study horticultural science.

This is a 12 week, part-time course. It will be delivered via blended learning, a combination of in-class and online learning. Students will be taught how to use the digital media required for online learning. Find out more about blended learning at Glenealy IT Centre.

On successful completion of this course students will be awarded two minor QQI awards- Level 5 Biodiversity and the Natural Environment and Level 4 Horticulture Science.
